2019 Capital Projects - Your Fees at Work

For the 2019 season the BCC Board of Trustees voted to raise the Youth League fee to raise funds for some capital projects.  One such project was to renovate Nash 2.  Nash 2 was selected as it is lighted.  Each fall we also engage in a rotating field renovation program to improve the playability of our existing fields for the upcoming Spring season.   This year it was Shunpike 1 and 2 which were renovated.  Also of note, we added sunshades to the Shun 2 dugouts this summer.  Here is a brief summary of the work  done this fall.

Nash 2:

Nash 2 is being renovated in stages as funds become available.  Last year Nash 2 was unplayable for days after any rain, in contrast with Nash 1 which was renovated in 2018.  The grading on Nash 2 was very poor, especially in the outfield, with low spots that pooled water and took days to dry.  We added 10 dump trucks of dirt to the outfield to level it and re-sodded the entire outfield to ensure there would be grass in time for the 2020 season.  Also, with increasing enrollment in our Youth League 2nd-4th grade, and travel programs, we wanted the scheduling flexibility an additional lighted 46/60 to 50/70 convertible field would provide, so we expanded the infield to accommodate both baselines (SKS in the Borough is also convertible but not lighted.)  A new expanded outfield fence is also being installed.  The Township approved funding for new lighting for the Nash complex, and CAF has offered to assist with helping pay for it along with the BCC.  Unfortunately, the cost estimate from the lighting company came in over the original budget so we continue to work with the Township on how to fund the lighting upgrade.  Next fall, we plan to upgrade the infield fencing, dugouts and add a new scoreboard to Nash 2, bringing this field up to Nash 1 standards.  Once all renovations are complete, we believe Nash Park will be a great field complex for our under 13 year old players.

Shunpike 1 and 2:

These two fields are our workhorse fields for the 11-14 year old players. Shunpike 2 sees a lot of traffic as it fields ten Spring Youth League teams and up to six Spring and Summer travel teams, plus it is the site of the U11 District Ripken tournament in June.  This fall we removed all the infield and batter’s circle lips, laser graded the infield and re-sodded the infield borders, renovated pitcher’s mound and batter’s boxes, and sodded wear areas such as coach boxes and the dugout exit areas.  This work makes the field playable sooner after a rain and provides for smooth playing surfaces for our teams.  Shunpike 1 received the same treatment as Shunpike 2, just more of it, as it’s a bigger field.

It takes a lot of work and dollars to keep our fields in tip-top shape, but we believe it is worth it as our Township and Borough fields are some of the finest fields to play on in the region.  Thank you for your continued support of our youth baseball program!
